Minnesota Seaplane Pilots Association Offers $2,500 Scholarship

The Minnesota Seaplane Pilots Association is excited to extend a scholarship opportunity of $2,500. This grant is aimed at facilitating the pursuit of a single-engine seaplane rating or multi-engine seaplane rating. Don’t miss out on this fantastic chance to help you advance your skills and earn a seaplane rating!

The purpose of the Minnesota Seaplane Pilots Association scholarship is to promote and engage seaplane flying and businesses within the state of Minnesota. The scholarship was made possible by funds donated by one of MSPA’s corporate sponsors, Tanis Aircraft, a Hartzell company.

2024 Guidelines

Submission Requirements:

Include one complete application set of the following information (electronic submission only):

●  Completed Official MSPA application form

●  Copies of current FAA medical certificate, aviation licence, and last 2 pages oflogbook (must have current flight review)

●  Typed 500-word essay (see requirements below)

●  Two recommendation letters

●  Resume

Descriptive essay should include all of the following:

●  What is your interest in a seaplane rating

●  Your aviation history and goals and what you have done to achieve your goals

●  Volunteer and involvement in aviation activities

●  How will the scholarship help you and your present financial need

Applicant must use the funds at a flight school registered in the state of Minnesota. Recognized flight schools are registered and listed by the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Applicant does not need to be a Minnesota resident. All housing, travel, examiner fees and other costs are responsibility of the applicant. Funds will be paid directly to the flight school or reimbursed to pilot with receipts and logbook endorsements. All training must be completed by November 30, 2024.

2024 Seaplane Scholarship Recipients

Carsyn Krassas

Carsyn is a student at Mankato State University, Mankato Minnesota working towards a degree in Professional Flight. She has a 4.0 GPA and is active as Vice President of her Women in Aviation chapter in addition to volunteering to tutor and mentor other students. She is a member of the Mankato EAA chapter and assists at airshows, fly in breakfasts and other fundraising events. Carsyn’s interest in seaplanes stems from her early exposure to them growing up in the Brainerd Lakes area of Minnesota

Calla A. Frank

Calla is a graduate of Minnesota State University-Mankato where she earned her Aviation B.S in 2023. She is currently working on her CFI and plans to flight instruct this summer. Additionally, she is working towards completing her master's degree in information technology at the University of St. Thomas while playing her 6th year of Division 1 Hockey. During her free time, she enjoys reading and spending time with family, friends, and her rabbit, Jet.


John E. Niemczyk

John is currently a CFI working for Barnstormers Aviation in Bemidji, Minnesota. John earned a Private Pilot License in 2012 while pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Systems Management Power and Machinery at the University of Minnesota Crookston where he was President of Alpha Eta Rho, an aviation fraternity. John’s long term goal is to someday get into commercial work flying floats. He hopes to be able to give back to the community by sharing his knowledge and passion for aviation with the next generation of pilots.

John is now one of the newest Seaplane Pilots in Minnesota and a member of MSPA!
